Dr Moreau was absolutely thrilled with his new specimen, which He was completely convinced of its successfulness. The puma Montgomery had brought from London had cost too much money, however, this animal seemed to have an outstanding cleverness, the most similar to the human intelligence Dr Moreau had ever seen. During the whole process the puma had standed the pain quite well, and now that it was almost completed, She looked almost as human as Dr Moreau himself. However, even when She had the features of a woman, She had an incredibly strong and powerful body, more similar to a man. Last session Dr Moreau had even listened her voice, begging him to stop her pain, which gave him an endless amount of pleasure, due to the huge capacity and rationally shown by the subject. Dr Moreau couldn’t sleep much that night, his dream was about to become real, and he will show the scientific community and the whole world, that he was right and they were wrong, that their moral convictions were just a little issue in his way to scientific success, in his way to create human life.

That day Dr Moreau entered his laboratory, eager and blinded by ambition, He was preparing his tools when suddenly a whisper said: Why? – WHY?? Dr Moreau could not believe what He was hearing, so he decided to initiate a conversation with the puma to check her speaking abilities. He asked her banal questions and She answered all of them in perfect english, nevertheless, She asked again the same question : Why ? The doctor didn’t answer the question, and went directly to check his papers in his office, which was next to the patient chamber. Once there, He read again all his compilations about the speaking abilities on his subjects, but this case was…the puma case was… really unique. It didn’t make sense at all, He had tried to teach some of his human-animals to speak, but most of them reached their limit pretty soon, however, this case…Could it be possible that every single word the beast had listened during her stay with human beings, had got very deep into her mind, and She only needed a vivisection process to assimilate it? Could it be possible that pumas were the definitive subjects? He went outside to get some fresh air, He needed to assimilate his new discoveries. She really had the perfect body, which combined humanity with animal faculties, and now it seems that She possessed human intellect, his life’s work was about to be achieved. He entered the enclosure again and passed Pendrick in his way to the laboratory, who was smoking a cigarette. He entered the door, but He was so excited that he completely forgot to close it, and that saved his life. Once he was in front of the puma, He detected something in her eyes, was that a look of resentment ? Could this creature have real emotions and feelings ? Suddenly, He discovered the inevitable truth He had been avoiding for years, and all the rage of nature aroused against the human being, getting rid of her chains and jumping on the doctor, with the irrevocable intention of killing him. Dr Moreau took his revolver in that exact moment, and the beast and the doctor fell to the floor, however, when He was about to shoot She ran to the door, escaping from the laboratory. Dr Moreau got out from the laboratory to find Pendrick on the floor with his arm broken, and he suddenly realized his forehead was bleeding. Then He got out from the enclosure to find her.

He walked through the island until he reached a huge tree, just before getting into the dense jungle, a growl sounded deep in the wood. Suddenly, the bull-man and the little pink-sloth man appeared running away from the forest, they were horrified, which indicated Moreau the possible location of his target. After been walking for a long time he passed severals monsters running in the opposite direction, so He just had to follow the trail. 

The sun was high in the sky when He reached the westward extremity of the island. Suddenly He stepped into a glade, where the puma was laying on the floor, resting after the run. Moreau exhaled tired as well, but faced the creature. The puma stood on two legs and spoke:

I listened your whole conversation with Pendrick, you were in the room next to the laboratory. You think you can do whatever you want with your “ end justifies the means “ doctrine, you think you can surpass ethics and morality, you even consider yourself an spiritual man, trying to justify your actions using religion. However, you play to be god, your megalomania makes you think you can take lifes and used them for your own purposes, you…you… Suddenly the beast put her hands on her head, and a shriek of pain was emitted by the puma. Dr Moreau understood what was going on, such a level of intelligence in an animal was something completely unprecedented, and it of course, had side effects. Nevertheless, it was the best attempt he had ever achieved, He was almost touching his dream…

I know your weakness !! you can’t kill me, your obsession will be your tomb, She said, her voice changed into a growl, and her animal instinct possessed her completely. He was putting some distance with the creature when She decided to attack him. However, the doctor feared to hurt the creature in vital organs, so he decided to shoot the beast in her legs, but her fast movements made it impossible. After three shoots, he stepped back and hid behind a tree, the situation was really rough. The puma disappeared in the wood, preparing her next step and stalking her victim. Moreau had just three bullets left and he decided to cover his back against the tree, reducing the chances of a surprise attack, and preparing himself to face the beast. He was decided to take his creature back to the laboratory. He aimed his revolver to the wood and waited, their final encounter was close. He tried to breath to be precise, He inhaled and exhaled, when suddenly the puma appeared where Moreau thought She would appeared, however, She was incredibly fast and Moreau did not have much time to react. The puma beat Moreau with her hands, which still had the fetters around them, giving a killing blow to her creator, when He shot his revolver in panic, trying to get rid of the creature. The bullet reached her in the shoulder and got out through her shoulder-bone. The puma screamed out with pain and twisted Moreau’s hand, to avoid another shot. The revolver jumped from Moreau’s hand, which was practically broken and useless, then a shriek of pain was emitted. Both were mortally wounded, and the puma fell to the floor lifeless. Moreau was aware of his situation, it was just a matter of time. He observed the dead puma and cried aloud the same word the puma told him in the lab: WHY? Why such a fate to a so dedicated scientific? a whole life and years spent in vain… his words were ignored by the wind, and He fell to the floor and passed away.
